REVIEW: Jill Barber – Fool’s Gold

By Jan Smit

Canadian singer Jill Barber has recorded a beautiful collection of songs – Fool’s Gold – that is due to be released in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg in March 2015. All songs have been written by Jill herself in cooperation mainly with members of her band. A European tour is scheduled for later this year.

Fool’s Gold is jazzy; it is laid back; it is feet up in front of the fire place, dog lying at your feet. The tracks create an atmosphere of warmth, with piano, bass, clarinet, guitar and other instruments delicately blended together. Jill’s voice has a mysterious, vulnerable, and sometimes almost whispering quality to it. The album kicks off with Broken For Good – the most upbeat track of the entire ten song collection. The nine songs that follow are equally strong, but most are more laid back than the opening track. The tracks are transparant, and have a sometimes fascinating build up. The strings in To The Last are a treat. I like this CD very much. Highly recommended!

Must-listens from Fools Gold:

  • Broken For Good
  • The Least That She Deserves
  • To The Last
  • Darlin’ It Was You

VIDEO: We Fall Slowly – Right Here
